Ways to Stick To Your Diet During The Holiday Season

If you are on any type of weight loss programme, you will already be aware that sticking to the diet over the Christmas holidays is going to be a real challenge. You will not want to miss out on all the good food that will be on offer. Here are a few suggestions that could help you to survive the holiday season without completely falling off the weight loss wagon.

Drink Plenty of Water

If you are not doing this already, you will want to make sure that you drink plenty of water. Drinking a glass of water before you sit down for a meal will make your fill fuller which will result in eating less. The general consensus is that a healthy person should aim to drink about 4 to 6 glasses of water each day. So get your glass, add some ice and enjoy a drink before eating.

Eat From a Smaller Plate

One way to help you reduce the amount of food you eat is to use a smaller plate. It is normal to completely cover a plate with all sorts of delicious food regardless of the size. Most people do not even realise how big or small their portion sizes are so if you use a smaller set of plates you will have a much smaller surface area to fill. As long as you do not make the mistake of piling your plate up, you will definitely eat a lot less than if you use a normal size plate. Be strict with yourself and refrain from taking second helpings.

Try To Do Some Exercise

The last thing that you will want to think about is taking exercise during the Christmas holidays but as we all know, this is an important component of any weight loss programme. If possible, try to maintain some level of exercise.

A great way to add some element of exercise into the holidays is to get the rest of the family involved. You can do this by suggesting that everyone join in and play some team games. You can choose something like Frisbee, a game of softball or tag football. If you can get everyone running around in the garden and you will not even realise that you are exercising. If you live in a cold climate, make sure everyone is wrapped up warm. A great reward could be a hot cup of cocoa for everyone as long as you make sure that it is the low calorie variety.

Replace The Fat In The Cooking Process

If you are in charge of cooking the Christmas meal, you can supplement the high calorie food with a lighter alternative. Choose ingredients and ways of cooking that reduces the fat content of your meal. This includes using less fat and oil to roast the turkey and potatoes, and choosing fruit based desserts instead of the creamy cakes and puddings.

Sticking to any type of diet during the holiday season would be a challenge for anyone, however if you can plan ahead and eat consciously, you will do less damage to your efforts and still enjoy the festive season with your family and friends.
